Studying the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the State of Israel, serving as the foundation for its democratic and national identity and values. It expresses the state’s core principles—liberty, justice, peace, and equality—and connects the Jewish people’s historical past to its vision for the future in the Land of Israel.
At Yahav – Educating for Zionism, we view the Declaration as a central source of inspiration. Each year, ahead of Independence Day, we hold a public learning journey open to all. Through in-person gatherings, online study sessions, and special episodes of the Ein LeTzion podcast, we foster renewed dialogue on identity, Zionism, and values in today’s Israel.
All content is freely available for viewing, study, and listening at any time. In addition, we offer a lesson plan for anyone wishing to further explore and deepen the learning experience in a group or classroom setting.

Ein LeTzion – A Clear View of Zionism
If Herzl, Ben-Gurion, Jabotinsky, and Yigal Alon are more than just street names to you; if the State of Israel matters to you; and if you’ve always wondered about the ideas that shaped the thinking of the founding figures of Zionism—you’ve come to the right place!

In the episodes of the Ein LeTzion podcast, we meet well-known figures from Israeli public life: thinkers, cultural leaders, politicians, academics, and members of civil society who engage daily with the challenges facing Israeli society and the State of Israel. We ask each guest to choose foundational Zionist texts that resonate with their worldview. Together, we read, discuss, and explore what these writings can teach us about the pressing issues of our time. We aim to delve into the ideas behind these texts, to understand the perspectives of the thinkers who wrote them, and to uncover their deeper meaning. These are conversations about bold ideas and visionary individuals who dreamed a state into being—about our past, present, and future, and about our role as the younger generation in sustaining and evolving the Zionist vision.

Ein LeTzion is a thought-provoking podcast for those who seek more than the here and now, brought to you by Yahav – Educating for Zionism and the Berl Katznelson Foundation.

We invite you to listen and join the conversation.

"The Social Question"

In one of the most turbulent periods experienced by the Zionist movement and the State of Israel, we embarked on an exploration, led by Professor Pnina Oz-Salzberger, of the roots of the idea of liberal democracy as expressed in the writings of Ze’ev Jabotinsky, a leader of the Zionist movement and the spiritual leader of the Likud party.

"Judaism as Culture"

The Zionist movement emerged as a secular, youthful, and dynamic counter-movement. It sought to create, renew, and forge anew, often through the erasure and rejection of the Jewish past. From its inception, and even more so during the period of the Yishuv (pre-state Jewish community in Palestine) and the establishment of the state, Zionism operated in the tension between preserving the historical connection with the past and the Jewish generational chain, and creating a new world, a new reality, and a new Judaism here in the Land of Israel.

The People’s Army in a Democratic State

In this chapter, we explore the relationships between the military and society, morality and warfare, and the military and civilian leadership. Dr. Idit Shapira-Gitelman leads us in a discussion on law and justice, philosophy, and civil society. Beginning with David Ben-Gurion’s order to establish the IDF in 1948, through the IDF document, and up to the current protests by reservists, we seek to trace the importance of the moral justification of the IDF and its servicemen and servicewomen.
